International Competition Composition

Euphonium and Symphonic Band


  • Art. 1

The competition is open to composers of all nationalities, without age limits. Each composer may participate with only one composition.

Compositions must be unpublished and never played, on pain of exclusion from the competition.

  • Art. 2

Compositions may belong to any tendency, genre, or musical form, as long as they comply with the technical specifications set out in this announcement.

Compositions must be inspired by the folk song indicated in attachment 1.

The word “creative” is important in this context. It means that the competitors should be free to use the folk song in any way they want. They can use it as a quotation, as a theme and variations, or in any other creative way.

  • Art. 3

The scores must be composed for the following ensemble at most:

Flute 1 & Flute 2 (2° also Piccolo); Oboe; Bassoon; E♭ Clarinet;

B♭ Clarinet 1, 2 & 3; E♭ Alto Clarinet (optional); B♭ Bass Clarinet; E♭ Alto Saxophone 1 & 2; B♭ Tenor Saxophone; E♭ Baritone Saxophone; B♭ Trumpet 1, 2 & 3; F Horn 1, 2, 3 & 4; Trombone 1, 2 & 3; Euphonium; Tuba; Harp (opt.); Timpani (26’, 29’);

4 Percussion: Timpani (26′, 29′); (glockenspiel, xylophone, snare drum, bass drum, hand cymbals, suspended cymbal, wind chimes, triangle, 2 wood blooks, 5 temple blooks, 2 bongos, ratchet, whip, shaker, maracas, castanets, 4 bells (C, E♭, F, A♭).

  • Art. 4

The minimum duration of the piece must be 5 minutes, the maximum approximately 10 minutes. The piece can be divided into various movements.

Scores must be submitted by no later than June 15, 2024, exclusively by email to: competitionarmoniedellostilaro@gmail.com

in PDF format together with an mp3 or midi audio file (not mandatory).

The pieces must be transcribed with music notation software (© Finale, © Sibelius, © Dorico, © MuseScore) and in a strictly anonymous form and devoid of any identifying marks, including the title. Each copy must be clearly and visibly marked with a motto in order to guarantee anonymity during the evaluation by the jury.

Prize

  • Public performance of the winning piece at the “Riflessi nel passato” event, 3rd edition (August 27-31, 2024), Euphonium soloist: Steven Mead.
  • Prize of €500[1]
  • Recognition plaque
  • Audio/video recording of the concert
  • Accommodation, meals, and excursions in the area from August 29 to 31, 2024, covered by the organization
  • Free participation in the Masterclass in Composition held by Maestro Girolamo Deraco (August 30, 2024)

The jury reserves the right to award one or more special mentions with the possibility of performing the piece in the next season.

The winning composer will be required to send the individual parts within 5 days of notification of the prize, under penalty of forfeiture of the prize and disqualification.

The Jury is composed of:

The Jury reserves the right not to award the prize if it does not consider any of the compositions received to be worthy.

  • Art. 8

The winner will be announced on July 1, 2024 and will be published on the website

The organization will inform the participants of the result.

  • Art. 9

An audio/video recording will be made of the winner’s concert. The winning composer agrees to authorize this recording at the time of registration. It is understood that this recording may be publicly distributed by radio, television, and the internet, both nationally and internationally, and may eventually be published on a record label.

  • Art. 10

Any changes to these rules may be necessary due to “force majeure” and will be communicated promptly via email, on the competition website, and on social media.

In the event of disputes, the Italian-language version of the Rules published on the competition website shall prevail. The Court of Locri shall have jurisdiction.

  • Art. 11

Entering the Competition implies the implicit acceptance of all the rules of this Regulation and the consent to the use of personal data in accordance with the law.
